What Is It?
Nandrolone Decanoate (Deca 300) is a popular substance in aesthetics both now and for the past fifty years. Known as a 19-nortestosterone because it has been chemically modified by the removal of a carbon atom at the 19th carbon position, this is a unique substance for athletes. This modification leads to weaker androgenic effects while maintaining a relatively strong muscle promoting effect on the body. This gives the drug its popular place in bulking and some cutting cycles. But, the drug’s unique structure means it has some effects that are not seen with other, similar drugs. So, there are a few considerations that must be looked at when choosing this substance for performance enhancement.
Nandrolone Decanoate 300: A Short Guide
Nandrolone Decanoate is a form of the drug where a decanoic acid ester is added to the chemical body. For those unfamiliar with the term, an ester acts as a chemical delivery agent that controls the rate at which a drug is released in the body. Decanoic acid is one of the longest lasting esters, and can extend the drug’s existence in the body to as long as four weeks. However, the half-life of the drug, or the time it takes to reach half its active concentration, is approximately 10 days. But, this can either increase or decrease depending on the dose, with higher doses having longer half-lives. This is the same case when the drug reaches peak levels in the blood stream, with smaller doses (~100 mg) achieving peak levels at around 30 hours, but doses over this (≥150 mg) reaching peak levels at around the 72-hour mark.
Considering that doses for athletes would likely exceed 150 mg, the longer time to reach peak levels and larger half-life should be noted as it may mean fewer administrations of the drug are required. Nandrolone Decanoate 300, sometimes called Deca 300, is a form of the drug delivered at 300 mg/ml doses. So, for every ml of solution, a 300 mg dose will be delivered to the body. Nandrolone is used in the body in similar form to testosterone, by activating on androgen and secondary cell receptors to promote particular actions through DNA expression that cause increased protein synthesis, decreased protein breakdown and higher muscle satellite cells.
However, its metabolization in the body creates a different substance than conventional Testosterone. When the drug is acted upon by the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, instead of producing Dihydrotestosterone, as would be the case with testosterone, in place it creates Dihydronandrolone (DHN). This is the primary reason for the lower androgen profile of this drug, but also means the use of a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor will also boost the androgen-related side effects, which will be discussed below.
Deca 300 Side Effects
Side effects of Deca 300 are slightly kinder than other conventional drugs but are also unique in that they are sometimes more difficult to prevent or combat.
Nandrolone Decanoate side effects include:
- Estrogen-related effects - these include a higher risk of gynecomastia, fat storage and water retention. But, the risk here a lower than other drugs and is mainly contributed to by the relatively stronger progestational activity this drug has. It is estimated to be only one-fifth as estrogenic as related compounds.
- Androgenic effects - these include acne, oily skin, possible increased risk of accelerated hair loss and virilization (formation of male traits) in women. Again, the risk of these effects are much lower than other drugs but are still possible.
- Lowering of natural testosterone - this is one of the stronger negative effects that this drug has over its cousins, with a dose of 300 mg per week lowering production by 70% in the body over only 6 weeks.
- Cardiovascular effects - this includes a risk of left ventricle growth in the heart and a rise in unhealthy LDL cholesterol with a simultaneous decrease in healthy HDL cholesterol.
Interestingly, the negative effects on cholesterol seem to be non-existent at lower, therapeutic doses (≤100 mg per week). But, at larger doses (~ 600 mg per week), common in athletes, it exhibits a slightly more detrimental effect than other hormones. This drug also has no effect on the liver due to the lack of c17-alpha-alkylation.
Benefits of Using Nandrolone Decanoate
Nandrolone Decanoate benefits include many of the benefits of other anabolic substances. However, one unique advantage to this drug is the need for far fewer injections for optimal effect. This reduces the risk of sores, irritated skin and infection of injection sites. Another benefit to Deca Durabolin 300 is because of its low estrogen-related impact on the body, it can be used for either cutting or bulking cycles, particularly in a lean bulking when you're looking to maximize weight gain while minimizing water retention and fat gain.
Nandrolone also seems to be well tolerated with other drugs, as many commonly combine this drug with similar compounds when gaining weight. However, this tolerability is not certain due to lack of research and the combination of different substances will always increase the risk of adverse effects.
Results: Before and After
Deca Durabolin has been shown to deliver relatively powerful anabolic impact on its own, with one study showing a 2.4 kilogram increase in muscle in only 6 weeks, with a small (0.5 Kg) simultaneous decrease in fat. So, Nandrolone Decanoate 300 may have the potential to provide further benefits to size and strength. But, it should be noted that, when compared to Testosterone, it has a slightly less consistent anabolic effect, though it does seem to encourage upper body growth to a greater extent. This lesser effect, coupled with the strong suppression of natural levels, means this compound should be combined with testosterone.
